YACHTING REVELS

REEFED SAILS ‘FOR REGATTA WATER TOO ROUGH FOR ROWING Spanking nor’-castcrly winds, to which the waterfront at St. Leonards is particularly susceptible, caused the fourt postponement of the rowing in as many years at the ninth annual Buries-St. Leonards regatta on Saturday afternoon. Midday would havo been an ideal time for the racing, but when it should have started two hours later, long troughs between white-tops were in evidence, and rowing was out of the question. A temporary postponement was ordered, but there was no improvement in conditions, which remained unsuitable all day. Most of the oarsmen, having had previous experience of the vagaries of St. Leonards conditions, omitted to unload their skiffs from the railway trucks, and made an early departure when abandonment was announced. A future date for the eight races may be arranged. It is an ill wind that blows no good; it is said, so what caused such disappointment among the 32 crews of rowers was welcomed by yachtsmen and launch crews, who revelled in the whistling wind, which tossed and tilted their various craft and sent spray and spume mast high about them. Fifteen yachts with sails reefed contested three races, and the other two events divided entries from eight power boats. But despite their racing under the Mark Foy system, which simplifies the placings for the lay map spectator, they did not contribute that competitive spirit enjoyed by regatta enthusiasts. These numbered about a couple of hundred, including many who travelled by motor and viewed the sailing in comfort from the 50 odd cars which lined the roadway in the vicinity. Harmonious understanding existed between the officials on the flagship and competitors, so that the events wore dispatched without delay, and the programme was completed without a hitch. The course started at the flagship, which was moored slightly inshore from the main channel about 100yds north of the jetty, and provided a rim to Burke’s Point, a long beat to Curie’s Point, and a home run to the flagship. Burke’s Lagoon was the scene of the model yachting, three fine handicap races being contested by a fair sized fleet of boats. King George Hall was crowded for the usual regatta concert and dance on Saturday night, when an attractive programme, arranged by Mr F. M. Tuohy, was presented. Midway through the evening the regatta prizes were presented by the Mayor of West Harbour (Mr Arthur Smith). Results:— YACHTING. ALL COMERS’ HANDICAP.
