Sir Kingsley Wood, in a speech at a transport congress on improvement in social conditions, said Britain had made a great contribution towards the main housing needs of large sections" of its people. She had spent more money and had made a greater contribution during the last few years than any other country in the world, but there was still a great deal to be done. Local authorities throughout the country had met their responsibilities, as far as the clearance of slums was concerned, and a campaign had been started against the evils of overcrowding, which the Government wanted to deal with as quickly as possible. _ The first surveys were in progress in. many parts of the country, and in - some they were nearing completion.
