MR DOWNIE STEWART’S CANDIDATURE.

TO THE EDITCE. Sir,—Mr Downie Stewart, I understand, is a Presbyterian, but he has a marked characteristic of the good Catholic in being ready to suffer for his beliefs. When Mr Stewart gave up the plums of office because of a difference of belief with his associates on certain points of policy ho went up a lot in my estimation. To tell you the truth, I did not think anyone but a Catholic would have done it. _ Very, very few instances of such a thing can be quoted in the political history of New Zealand. If there were more wo would have a higher opinion of our politicians. To mo the_ supreme test of a man’s sincerity is in finding him ready to suffer for liis beliefs. —I am. etc., Dunedin West Catholic. November 21.
