The, outside course proper was open at Invercargill this- morning, but only a few horses were : sent against the watch. There was a lot of moisture on the ground, and the going will be heavy to-morrow. Amelita and Venite ran five > furlongs in lmin*-9 T-ssec, both finishing well. Amelita will not fulfil her local engagements, and . will. be reserved .for the Dunedin, meeting. . Ocean Singer beat Rowlands oyer half a mile in 5Y 2--ssec. Over a similar distance Enwpod took 57 2-osee. Tim course proper was open at Riverton’this morning, when; a number of candidates for the Invercargill meeting Were sprinted. The going was on the dead side. . . Tartan Maid, Ada, and Bay Biddy finished in the order named over five furlongs in 53sec. From a standing start, Slaemisli and Totolomai ran four furlongs in 54sec. Wall Street was too good for Centum over four furlongs in 52 3-ssec. Wall Street is very well. Mayam and Bay Duke were together at the end of a half-mile in 52 3-ssec. Niggerhead and the steeplechaser Nylofis ran four furlongs in 56sec. Niggerhead has come on well since the Riverton meeting, and is greatly improved. Red Terror ran half a mile in 53sec. No visiting horses have yet arrived.

FIASCO AT NEWMARKET STARTER'S RECALL SIGNAL NOT SEEN Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 15. (Received May 16, at 12.5 p.m.)„ • There was, a startling fiasco at Newmarket when 13 of a field of 16 horses got away to a false, start in the two-year-old Stakes ' and completed the course. The starter’s recall signal was not perceived by the official with the recall flag. The three horses remaining at the post were eventually joined by Master Jinks, one of the false starters, whose owner exercised his option of restarting him. The race was run 25min later by the quartet. Master Jinks was unplaced. The other false starters had withdrawn.' LADIES' GOLF SEMI-FINALS fSracuL to the * Stab.’] AUCKLAND. May 16. The semi-finals of the ladies’ provincial golf championship, played in steady rain, resulted: Mrs E. L.. Barker (Rotorua) beat Miss Eileen Culling (Auckland), 2 and I; Mrs R. S. Deighton . (Titirangi) beat Mrs G. R. Buttle (the Auckland and Maiingakiekie player, who recently Won the Taranaki championship), 3 and 2. Mrs Buttle had beaten Miss M.
