LADIES’ HOCKEY

ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Otago Women’s Hockey Association was held last night, Miss M. Hill presiding in the absence of the president (.Mrs Richard Hudson). Moving the adoption of the annual report (already published) and balancesheet, jVJ iss Hill extended congratulations to the successful teams in the different grades. The major competitions had been won by Otago, in the A grade, and Momona in both the B and C grades. Otago had now headed the competition for two successive seasons, and she hoped the standard of play reached by this team would be emulated this season by the other first grade sides. She noted with pleasure that Watea had rejoined the association. Referring to the dominion chqmpionships the speaker remarked that though the representatives of the province were not as strong a side as expected they had performed quite creditably, coming second in their section. The association congratulated Misses Ada Mackie and Hazel Johnson in being selected for the New Zealand team to tour- Australia in two or three months’ time. Miss Johnson, who had been transferred to Christchurch, was not available, but in Miss Mackie they had a worthy representative from Otago. During the past season the game in the primary schools had been given every encouragement. Sticks had been donated to the schools, and finance was granted from the Herbert Smith trust fund. , The balance-sheet revealed a credit balance of £1 10s lOd. The report was adopted. OFFICE-BEARERS. The following office-bearers were elected :—Patroness. Mrs Richard Hudson ; president, Mrs Walter Ross; vice-pre-sidents—Mesdames G. A. Nelson, .1. H. Duncan, and A. Barnett, Misses M. Hill, M. Sonntag, Misses I. Lce,<A. Mackie, and R. Wilson ; delegates to the New Zealand Hockey Association, Misses A. M. Yorkston and M. Downes. TOUR OF AUSTRALIA. A New Zealand hockey team would visit Australia during the coming season for the first lime, said Miss Hill. The tour would involve an outlay of £450. Means of raising the money had been discussed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Association last year, and a suggestion had been made by the Otago delegates that a levy of Is on each playing member throughout the dominion be charged. Personally, she was in favour of this method, and she moved to that effect. Instead of the registration fee being Is it would now be 2s. Mr T. Bradshaw (Ravensbourne) strongly opposed the levying of players in junior grades, and said that if the proposal were put into force his club, in company with many others, would bo crippled. The motion was carried, only one dissentient vote being recorded, GENERAL. It was reported that the decision of the South Otago Sub-association to form an association of its own had been supported by the Otago Association, which had forwarded its application to the dominion body with a favourable recommendation. r Opening day was fixed for May 4, entries for the various grades to close on April 29.
