YOUNG BIRD SHOW

DUNEDIN CLUB'S ANNUAL FIXTURE AVEMdE aUALITY EXHIBITS Although the number of entries received for the Dunedin Specialists’ Young Bird Club’s twenty-third annual show, which was opened in the Fullers and Victoria Halls this morning, did not quite reach last year's total, the quality in many cases was well up to the average. In some instances the judges were faced with a difficult task in placing the birds, but the pigeon, portion of the canary section, children’s pets, and baking prize-lists were completed by lunch time. The fancy pigeon section, said the judge {Mr 11. Bankshaw) suffered somewhat as a result of a slight decrease in the number entered. However, the birds were showing very nicely in their first feathers. The bald-head tumblers were excellent, the winning black hen being outstanding. The hlacdc faintail placed first was also full of quality, hut the first yellow fantaij would be it very much improved bird at the winter shows.

Homer pigeons formed quite a good glass, biit the judge (Mr C. Conley) said, that quite a number of the birds were only halfway through the moult arid therefore' not ready for exhibiting. ■ In the clear yellow class of Norwich canaries, said the judge ’(Mr R. J. Brown), the winning bird, was smaller than the others shown, but was well proportioned and good in type and feather. The variegated'yellow class presented a little difficulty, but the first was eventually selected because it was showing off better than the second. The judge also found it hard to separate the first and second clear huffs. The second bird was short of feathers in the tail, this losing it the premier place. The variegated buff winning bird was outstanding, and should be a champion by the time it was fully developed. It was shown perfectly. In the mule or hybrid section the red noil was judged tie winner. These birds were difficult to breed, and owing to the evenness of its colour and size the first bird was thus placed. The second was a goldfinch mule. As the rollers were judged on the qaulity of their singing, the winner was selected because of a better

tone. Mr Brown also said that of the budgerigars shown only two hatS Bflfn trained. The winning bird was a yellow. which was outstanding in type, markings, and quality of leathers. The Judge of the Yorkshire canaries (Mr W. G. Wall) said they were a very poor lot; in fact, the poorest seen for some years. The best bird in the show bad "started to moult, and, therefore,Most the Thomson trophy. Commenting on the poultry, the judge (Mr W. Tibbies) said that the fancy classes were rather disappointing, although a few individual birds were good, particularly the buff Orpington pullets. Utility classes were exceptionally strong, and there was a very fine display of White Leghorn cockerels and pallets. Of the latter no fewer than twenty-one were exhibited. The winning -White Leghorn pullet secured several special awards, including the one for the best light bird in the show. Minoreas were small in numbers and only fair in quality, and Rhode Island Heel birds were fair. Black Orpingtons were disappointing, the buff class being much better, the buff bird securing the special award for the best bird in heavy breeds. 'Australorps were a mixed lot, very few of them approaching the correct type, while bantams were fair, with a few good birds .on exhibition. Results of this morning’s judging : PIGEONS. ' HOMERS.
