OBITUARY
e ALEXANDER BLACK The very many friends of Mr Alexander Black have learned with sincere regret of his death at his residence in. Roslyn on Wednesday of this week,. Though by no means one of the “ all things to all men ” type, for he had firm opinions of his own and was not easily induced to deflect therefrom, he had the natural gift of companionability, being invariably considerate to others, and everyone ‘ who knew him liked him for his business ability, bis high character, and his readiness to render community services. He was born at Melbourne in 1858, was brought to Dunedin' by his parents four years later, his father opening a store in Maclaggan street. After being educated at Park’s School and the Otago Boys’s High School, he took up the profession of accountancy* serving in the employ of Scoular and Co., then with Reid and Gray, and was still a, young man when he joined the City Corporation staff as examiner of _ accounts, from which office he retired in 1926. It is remembered of Mr Black that he took an active interest in volunteering, being for a long while chief petty officer in the Dunedin Navals and one of its marksmen. Ho was also president of North Dunedin Football Club. His services as gymnastic instructor to a class of north' end lads are not forgotten, nor has it faded from memory that he aided the movement for the laying out of the Woodhaugh Gardens. For many years he sat on the George Street School Committee, and ultimately undertook its secretaryship. He actively associated himself with First Church work,' and subsequently was made an elder by St. Stephen’s session. In his later years Mr Black became an enthusiastio bowler, joining first the Kaikorai Club and then the Dunedin Club, and he took the office of secretary of the Dunedin Club, holding it until a year rf»o. The burial was in' private this morning at the Northern Cemetery, the Rev. D. C. Herron conducting the service.
