SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS The Otago senior swimming championships were continued at the Municipal Baths last night, two events —the men’s 880yds championship and the ladies’ 440yds—being decided. The Jialfmile was won by the intermediate, J. ]). O’Driscoll, who had annexed the 440yds on Monday night, and without being extended the Dunedin representative won in the Otago record time of 12min 19sec. This time was also better than the existing intermediate record of 12min 26sec put up by N. Batchelor (Canterbury) at Auckland in 1020. but as it was put up in a senior event it cannot, of course, be recognised. The ladies’ 440yds resulted in a good win for Miss Gwen Rix (Dunedin), and though the time was slow 'she registered a creditable performance. Results : MEN’S 880 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. Title-holder. J. O. Byrnes (Dunedin), 12min 64 4-ssec. J. I). O’Driscoll (Dunedin) 1 J. O. Byrnes (Dunedin) 2 R. H. Nuttall (Zenith) 3 Only starters. O’Driscoll led out, and at the end of a lap had already established a lead of half a yard. Leaving the hundred behind in 72sec, he was then 2yds in front of Byrnes, and at the end of 200yds, done in 2min 35sec, had increased his advantage over Byrnes, Nuttall being half a lap away. With twelve laps to go O’Driscoll lapped Nuttall. and with just on three laps to go Byrnes was also lapped. The latter hod by this time lapped Nuttall. Swimming very steadily, O’Driscoll further increased his advantage, and finishing strongly won by 40yds, Nuttall being nearly two laps back third. Time, 12min 19sec —an Otago record. LADIES’ 440 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. Miss G. Rix (Dunedin) 1 Miss A. Gillies (Kiwi) 2 Also started: Miss E. Morrison (Dunedin). Miss Rix established a lead of about 10yds in the first two laps, Miss Gillies keeping ahead of Miss Morrison, who retired at the end of 300yds. Miss Rix further improved . her position, and swimming determinedly won by about a length from Miss Gillies, who swam very gamely. Time, 7min 12 4-ssec. TO-NIGHT’S RACES. The men’s mile championship and the ladies’ 220yds breast-stroke championship will be decided to-night. On Tuesday evening the senior championship carnival will be swum off.
