Mr M. J. Moodabe, governing director of Amalgamated Theatres Ltd., arrived yesterday accompanied by Mrs Moodabe. They are staying at tho Grand Hotel. Mr K. T. Moody left on his return to Wellington this morning. Mr H. Paine was a passenger by today’s second express, bound for Wellington. Rev. J. M'Gregor, of Stratford, was on the through express this morning, going to Oamaru after attending the Waikaka School jubilee. Advice has been received (states a Press Association message from- Wellington) that His Royal Highness the Grand Prior of the Order of St. John, the Duke of Connaught, has approved of the recommendation of the ChapterGeneral that Mr Francis William Ward, a serving brother of the order, be appointed assistant _ commissioner in charge of the Wellington District Commandery in New Zealand, vice. Mr Arthur 0. Richardson, who has been transferred to the reserve. On a mission to study Empire trade conditions in New, Zealand and Australia, Sir John Sandeman Allen, M.P.,chairman of the Commercial Committee of the House of Commons, will arrive in Auckland on Monday next. He will bo accompanied by Lady Sandeman Allen. The Very Rev. Dr J. Morkane, who is relinquishing the position of rector of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, has been appointed Administrator at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Dunedin. Father Collins,, who has been Administrator at St. Joseph’s for some years past, will take charge of a new district to be formed at Forbury Corner. Father F. M'Mahon, of Holy Cross College, will become inspector of Catholic schools, in place of Father Scanlan, of Lawrence, and Dr H. J. O’Neill, of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, will become parish priest of Mosgiel. Dr Morkane left for Christchurch this morning. The members of the Main Highways Board, under tho chairmanship of Mr C. J. M'Kenzie, left Roxburgh by car on Tuesday morning in continuation of their South Island tour, calling at Tapanui, Gore, Mataura, Wyndham, and Edendale during the day before finally, arriving at Invercargill. They left Invercargill for Riverton, Tuatapere, Otautau, Nightcaps, Mossburn, and Te Anau; and to-day they will visit the Eglinton Valley, returning to Gore to spend the night. To-morrow the party will depart for Balclutha, and will then proceed to Dunedin. In a letter written to a Christchurch' friend from the Taj Mahal Hotel, Bombay, Dr Walter Williams, president of the University of Missouri, who is on a tour of the world, states that after visiting Singapore he is booked to leave that port on January 19 for Melbourne, where he is due on February 5. After touring Victoria and New South Wales he intends crossing the Tasman to New. Zealand, and should reach Wellington on February 19. Dr Williams, apart from being one of the pioneer teachers of journalism, is the author of many, books, among them being ‘How the Cap’n Saved the Day,’ -‘ Some Saints and Some Sinners in the Holy Land,’. ‘ Eloquent Sons of the South,' ‘ Missouri Since the Civil War,’ ‘ The Practice of Journalism,’ ‘Journalism: The Newest, Weapon for Democracy, J and ‘The Journalist’s Creed,’. He is also recognised as an international authority, in the profession of journalism and in educational training, for journalism. Ho has been described as one who, having “blazed the trail ” in journalism, has been granted that boon which comes to so few pioneers—that privilege of seeing his idea and his ideal of a school of journalism accepted as something real. Dr Williams is accompanied on Ins tour by his wife. ' • Sergeant J. Abel, of Invercargill, who has been spending part of his vacation in Canterbury and Dunedin, will leave here to-morrow for the Eglinton Valley prior to returning home. The Rev. A. B. Pywell is expected at Port Chalmers on Mondry _ from Deinstall to take over the Anglican parish,which also includes Ravensbourne.
