WAIRIO J.C.

Or!A! WIHS THE GUP DOUBLE TO RED SUNSET With a coal-miners’ strike in the district for the past eight mouths the Wairio Jockey Club required all the luck in the way of fine weather to run its annual meeting successfully, but, unfortunately, tiie luck turned against the club, and the fixture was marred by lio-ht, misty rain, which fell through most of the day. This eriously affected the attendance, the gate receipts being only £147 2s, and the totalisator turnover £4,307, as compared with £5,953 last year. . ■ . , The course was in excellent order, but rain during the previous thirty-six hours made it slow, but not slippery, and the times recorded were much slower than is usually the case on this course. Though the fields were small m two of the races, the sport provided was interesting, and in seven of the eight races the finishes were good. The racing was clean, and no inquiries were held. On account of the club being up against circumstances over which, the executive had no control, Mr A. D. MTvor gave his services as starter gratuitously, an action appreciated by the committee. A suitable rider could not bo found for Character, in the Ohai Maiden Handicap, and he was withdrawn. Mayam £7l, Orderwood £O6), Ada £G4, Slaemish £56), and Balia Salla £52 were the fancied candidates. The lastnamed was smartest out of the barrier, and led Glenham Lark, Irish Birdcatcher, Great Shot, and Slaemish along the back. Racing across the top Balia Salla got knocked back, and Irish Birdcatcher and Ada led Great Shot, Slaemish, and Glenham Lark into the straight. Ada looked a winner at the distance post, but Slaemish finished strongly and beat him a length. Mayam was half a length away third, with Orderwood and Great Shot next. Only Review was missing from the field for the Nightcaps Harness Trot, and A/.if re £199, Rollicking Wave £lo3}, Kibo £45, and Scotfree £4o} were the best fancied. Martello, Kibo, and the favoiritc wore the early leaders, and with less than half a mile to go Kibo, Martello, Azure, and Rollicking Wave were out by themselves. Racing acros the top, Scotfree, who had lost a lot of ground at the start, Chiming Billy, and Ppomotnx ran up to the leaders. Rollicking Billy was first into the straight from Scotfree, Kibo, Azure, Chiming Billy, and Apomotax. Azure challenged Rollicking Wave halfway down the running, and in a good finish the latter won by a head, with Apomotax only half a length off third, with Chiming Billy almost on terms with him, and Kibo next. Ohai £l46}, Signaller £l4O, and Steeton £lll} carried the good wagering on the Wairio Cup. As the barrier rose Signaller swung round and lost a hundred yards. Ohai led throughout from Steeton and won comfortably by two and a-half lengths from Night Rose. Steeton, who stopped badly over the last two furlongs, was a short length off third.

Amelita and Ecclcfeclian were withdrawn from the Woodland Handicap, for which Broughshane £lB3, Royal Emblem £9l, _ and Red Sunset £B7} were best fancied. Jack a Dandy and the favourite cleared right out from the others at the start, and at the end of live furlongs the favourite was beaten. Royal Emblem, who was slow to jump out, then joined Jack a Dandy, and half a furlong from home bumped him badly. Then Red Sunset put in her run and scored comfortably by nearly two lengths from Royal Emblem, with Jack a Dandy a length off third, the favourite being fourth.

Character was withdrawn from the Forde Memorial High-weight Handicap, and Spanish Maid £136, Thornton £125.}, and Night Bose £os} wore the best "backed. The favourite led Thornton throughout, and, drawing right away at the entrance to the straightbeat her homo by seven lengths, Vinegrower, the outsider of the field, being a length and a-half away third. Night Bose was badly left at the start, and took no part in the race. Martello and Young Nora were scratched from the Birchwood Saddle

Trot, and Master Lee £l5O, Scotfrce £l2O, Chiming Billy £Bl, and the Harriet Direct—Vacation bracket £504 the best fancied. The favourite was always in front, having Aparima and Chiming Billy as his nearest attendants throughout. He had to be ridden right out to beat the last-named by half a length, and Aparima was eight lengths away third, just in front of Hard Times and Kibo.

Hot Tea was withdrawn from the Wairaki Handicap, Lochlaggan £226f being backed down to a short price, with Clatter £125, Slaemish (penalised 3lb) £99, and Remindful £64 the next fancied. Remindful led the favourite and Mayam into the straignt, then Mayam took charge, and, -dulling off a good challenge from Lochlaggan, beat her home by half a length. Slaemish was four lengths away third, with Clatter next.

Thornton, who was coupled with Cough in the Wrey’s Bush Handicap, was withdrawn in favour of the latter. Red Sunset (penalised 71b) £156, Cough £143, and Royal Emblem £9l were the best fancied. Young Sentinel, Royal Embleml and Barn Door ed over the first seven furlongs, and tho favourite followed _ them into the straight. At the distance Red Sunset ran up, and had something in reserve to beat Young Sentinel by a short length, with Royal Emblem a length off third, and Cough next.
