LOCAL SALE PROSPECTS

OTAGO HALF-BRED SHOULD MAKE BETTER PRICES The following comments were made this morning by Mr S. Arthur, of Messrs Dalgety’s wool department:— As has been anticipated, owing to the depreciation in sterling, a feature of the Christchurch sale was the very keen demand from the Continent, and it is reported that for all the finer wools, suitable for Continental requirements, the demand was exceptionally keen up to a price. It would appear that the bulk of the fine half-breds were preferred by the Continent at prices from 7sd to SJd, and this provides a good indication to Otago growers of what to expect at the sale at Dunedin on Tuesday. It has been known for some time that the local mills have been particularly busy .this year, and it could not be said that much wool would be carried forward. It would appear from catalogues of the Christchurch sale to hand that'the local mill demand was not so pronounced as was anticipated. It is reported from Christchurch that local mill demands -were more pronounced in later catalogues, and it is confidently expected that keen competition will be forthcoming from them m Dunedin. Christchurch wools this season wore hardly up to the standard which could be expected from the favourable season. A good deal of dust was in evidence, and Otago halfbred wools should open up clearer and brighter, and generally rather firmer than the bulk of the Christchurch halfbreds. In sympathy with the preceding North Island sales, cross-breds again sold at ruinously low prices, and there were numerous lots of good, bright cross-breds which realised from Old to 4Jd. It is to be hoped that the Otago cross-breds. which are differently and better bred than the Canterbury wool, will meet with a rather bettor sale, t hough it is not to bo expected that higher prices will be obtained.
