CHRISTMAS GIFTS

WORK OF UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF DEPOTS No fewer than 800 unemployed were supplied with Christmas gift parcels by the St. Andrew street depot yesterday, and the voluntary workers were kept going at top pressure until 9 p.m. Although not so many were expected to be dealt with to-day, heavy demands are still being made on the depot, which will be open till 9 o'clock to-night. DOWUNG STREET DEPOT The Dowling street depot distributed a large quantity of clothing and children's footwear yesterday. Unfortunately, there was not enough footwear to go round, and some families had to bo content to receive one pair. Altogether, IG2 ipairs of boys' boots, 9G pairs of sandals, 66 pairs of girls' shoes, and a large quantity of gymnastic shoes were distributed, but there is still an urgent need for money for the footwear fund. A number of women's hats, donated by Messrs Ross and Glendining, was also distributed. The gymnastic shoes were a, gift from Messrs Waghorne Ltd., and a quantity of toys and clothing ,was contributed by Dr iWattj Palmerston. CHILDREN'S PARTY The Mayoress (Mrs R. S. Black) stated this morning that she wished to convey her very sincere thanks to all those who had helped in making the recent children's party the- success it was. The helpers were too numerous to mention individually, but to one and all she desired to express her appreciation. Additional donations for the children's party are acknowledged as follows: — Mr J. Shaw, cartage; Chas. Begg and Co., loud speaker; Mr John Gray, loan of 150 vases; Otago Co-op. Milk Supply Co. and employees, box butter; Miss Paterson, Waihola, toys; Mr Jack, books; Mrs James Begg, toys; Capt. Beaumont, £2 2s; Mrs Newbold, toys; Hudson, Iry, and Co., sweets; Stewarts Ltd., sweets; Phoenix Co., sweets; Mrs Barningham, sweets; Wardell Bros., sweets; Mrs D. A. Lake, sweets; Mrs Reid, toys; Mr D. Murdoch, sweets; St. Kilda Council, £5; Mrs Low, books; Mrs Acton-Adams, books. ALLOCATION OF WORK Men will report for work under the Unemployment Board's No. 5 scheme, on Thursday, December 24, 1931, as under: — D.C.C. Reserves Department.—B a.m., at Knox street, Opoho: Group 403.
