—Vice-Regal.--* The Governor-General and Lady Blcclisdloe arrived at Auckland from Rotorua yesterday and went into residence at Government House, where they will remain until early in the new year.;

The Prime Minister (Rt, Hon. G. W< Forbes) will • leave _ Wellington to-mor-row evening for his home at Cheviot,and in common with other Ministers of the Crown, he will be absent from Wellington until early in the new year,He presided at a meeting of Cabinet last evening. The Minister of Public Works (Rt.Hon. J. G. Coates) loft Wellington today for his home at Matakohe, North Auckland.

Sir James Mills arrived at Wellington to-day from England, and will proceed to-morrow to Auckland and Rotorua. , Mr and Mrs W., Paget Gale travelled to Timaru by tho second express to-day. Mr and Mrs J. H. Walker left by tho 11.35 train to-day, booked for Auckland, Bro. Carew, of the teaching staff of the Christian Brothers’ School at Dunedin, left to-day for a holiday in Australia,

jli- James Hutton, M.A., principal of the Greymouth Technical College, has been appointed rector of the Gisborne High School. There were fifty-two applicants.—Press Association telegram. Mr Lawrence Haggitt, of Wellington,arrives this evening to spend _ three weeks with his parents at Warrington.; Mr Ivon A. Oliver, late of Dunedin,and now director and Auckland manager of Oswald M. Smith and Co. Ltd.,paid a hurried visit to Dunedin over the week-end, and left by the second express yesterday for Auckland, en route for London, where ho will remain for some time at the firm’s London office.

Constable W. J. Irwin, who is under transfer from Lyttelton to Kaitangata’ as constable in charge, was met by the other members of the Lyttelton Police Force last evening and presented_ with a gold-mounted fountain pen, suitably, inscribed, as a mark of the esteem- in’ which he is held by his fellow-constables. In making the presentation, Sergeant W. H. Dunlop mentioned that Constable Irwin had come to Lyttelton eight and a-half years ago. _ Since then’ ho had passed his examinations for sergeant, senior-sergeant, and' sub-in-spector, and was now qualified to hold commisioned rank without further examination. - Christchurch correspondent.

Dr A. Tennyson Howie, who has been a house surgeon at the Auckland Hospital for the past year, was ordained recently by the Auckland Presbytery as a medical missionary for China. Dr Howie has been appointed to the staff of tho Presbyterian Mission Hospital at Kong .Chuen, near Canton, in place of Dr C. E. North, who had to retire on acconut of ill-health. Dr Hbwie was born at Waikaia, Southland, and educated at the Southland Boys’ High School. He took his medical course at the Otago University, serving for part of the time as demonstrator in anatomy. Since graduating M.B. Ch.B., he has been a house surgeon at tho Auckland Hospital. He has always taken a keen interest in Sunday _ school ana Bible class activities, _ and in the work of the student Christian movement. Before leaving for China early next month, Dr. Howie is to he married to Miss E. L, Seamer, a daughter of the Rev. A. J. Seamer, superintendent of Methodist Maori Missions.
