MR WALTER ARMIGER BOWRING PROMINENT PORTRAIT PAINTER Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, November 5. The death is announced of Mr Walter Armiger Bowring, a prominent New Zealand portrait painter. He was born in Auckland in 1874, but settled in Sydney in 1925. His death occurred after an operation. His health had been unsatisfactory for many months. [Mr W. A. Bowring, R. 0.1., was educated- at the Auckland Grammar School. He studied under Orphen and John in London. He contributed to ‘ Punch ’and other London journals.] MAJOR-GENERAL THORNEYCROFT LONDON, November 4. The death is announced of Majorgeneral Thorneyoroft, who was commander of the Australians and New Zealanders in the Western Transvaal during the Boer War. He was much criticised for ordering the abandonment of Spion Kop.
