On July 18 the Prefect of Marmarosh received an order from the Alin is ter of the Interior to arrest immediately tin priest Berinde, one of the leaders of the agitation. Ho visited several villages and harangued the populace, urging them to defend him against the authorities, and preaching a continuation of the retaliation against the alleged usury practised by the Jews. It is reported from Marmarosh •Sziget) that about 3,000 armed peasants, led by Berinde and other agitators, gathered in the village of Recego, determined to defend their leaders by armed force, and constructed barricades. The Minister of the Interior ordered immediate intervention by the authorities, and a company of soldiers, with .hundreds of gendarmes, was sent towards ilocege to restore order. The Prime Minister, M. Maniu, convoked a Cabinet Council to discuss measures against the growing anti-Semitic agitation. It is suspected, however, that the disorders are concocted by enemies of the present regime in order to discredit the Maniu Government as unable to maintain order
