GRANGE CLUB QUESTION OF GGACHIiiG The annual mooting of the Grange Club was hold last night in the club's pavilion at the North Ground, the president [Mr W. M. Beal) presiding over a largo attendance of members. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet,. the Chairman congratulated the club on the success it had attained last season. The club attiaued its liftieth anniversary during the season, and had held several functions which wore very successful. Members should bo proud of belonging to a club which had attained its jubilee, as it showed that in the earlier days of its existence the club was possessed of men of grit and determination who had carried on, often under difficulties. Those who bad followed on also deserved credit. The younger members should do all they could to carry on the traditions of the Grange Chib. Their thanks were due to the old players who had helped to make the jubilee functions a success. The fourth grade team had won its competition, and the ■ senior eleven won the fielding, trophy. The third grado team finished second in its competition, and lio referred to the outstanding performances of the captain (A. Bell), who had scored the highest aggregate of runs (382) during the season and had also taken fifty-six wickets. The senior eleven also finished second, and lie thought it was rather unlucky, as it had been depleted by the playing of club matches while representative games were in progress. Five members were away with the Otago team when ono club match was being played. He thought the Cricket Association should do its best to see that inlcrprovincial matches did not clash with club cricket. He stressed the need for the captains to encourage their men in the fielding department. Logan Park was a very fine- ground, but its inaccessibility was against it from a playing point of view. He thought the City Corporation might make some other arrangements to Convey the players there, as the tram service was totally' inadequate. The various club secretaries might make arrangements for a bus service to Logan Park. Referring to the appointment by the association of Mr F. T. Badcock as coach, Mr Beal said they had a very fine coach, who was going to be ono oftbo best they had ever had in Otago. They had had to leave the North Ground for Logan Park during the year, and this move had affected practices, playing, and finances. He hopea that tfiis season the club would be back on the North Ground. (Applause.) Mr E. A. Hamel seconded the report and balance-sheet, and congratulated the club on the position it occupied, despite the fact that it had had to change its headquarters., Ho thought the club had a great future before it, as there was much promising material in its ranks. If the club came back to the North Ground lie felt sure the finances would improve. Ho paid tribute to the fine work that had been done bv the president (Mr W, M. Beal), and the secretary (Mr W. A. Rowland). Mr Hamel also referred to the fielding performances oT C. Elmos and A. Knight in the first eleven, wbicli was set a .fine example, by A. Galland, who vvas ono of the best fields in Otago. Mr C. Chadwick expressed the hope that the coaching this season would not be spoilt by the Coaching Committee. He wanted to know if members of the committee went to. the winter practices every night or who had charge. The hours for coaching were from fi p.m. to 8 p.m., but he thought they should bo from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. so that more players could be taken Grange, with a membership of seventy plovers, had ' only six men being coached, and ho thought the club should have at least twenty. The Chairman said that the question of coaching was a matter for the Cricket Association, being beyond the club’s province. The desirability of more Grange players receiving coaching might be placed before the club’s delegates to the association. He did not agree that the hours of winter coaching should be extended till 10 p.m,, and personally_ he did not think that winter coaching should bo in the coach’s contract. That should bo left to him to carry on voluntarily. For summer practices the hours of coaching might be extended. Mr D. Hepburn said that consideration might be given to a suggestion that the coach should visit the various schools for the purpose of giving the teachers instruction in bow to coach ,the boys The report _ and balance-sheet were adopted unanimously.
