Bates and Dyson gave their side a good start, until Grimmett carao on at 33, and was immediately successful. Fairfax was expensive, and 100 appeared in ninety minutes. With the loss of two wickets, Bates and Turnbull added 93 before Grimmett effected a separation. Bates had batted excellently and Turnbull cleanly, both scoring at a fast pace. The third wicket fell at 152, and the batsmen were then dismissed at about every 10 runs.
