RAILWAY CUT LIKELY
IS ECONOMY AXE POISED? LIMITED EXPRESS AND CHRISTCHURCHINVERCARGILL NIGHT TRAIN NAKED [SriCIIL TO TKI * Stis.’] AUCKLAND, June 16. The Auckland ‘ Star’s ’ _ Wellington correspondent states that it is understood that drastic cuts wih be made in the dominion’s railway services if the Railway Commission adopts recommendations which, it is believed, will be made by the general • manager.: “ Cuts ” which may be proposed include tho abolition of:— (1) The Wellington-Auckland Day-* light Limited express. (2) The Wellington-New Plymouth night express. (3) The Christch rch-lnvercargill night express. In addition it may be recommended that_ several branch line services be abolished, and that other-: be severely curtailed. Some of the branch lines on which the economy axe may are in the South Island. NO ANNOUNCEMENT. Commenting on the rumoured heavy cuts in the rail -ay service, Mr H. H* Sterling yesterday said he had no announcement to make. The probability of such cuts is rather discounted by Mr Sterling’s recent statement when he indicated that the results of the nmning of the Daylight Limited had been so satisfactory that the train would be continued. “ The experiment made in running the Daylight Limited expresses for a longer period in order that the general passenger traffi.- by these trains, as distinct from holiday excursion traffic, might have an, opportunity .to become established is having the desired effect. These services nowhave a steady business in passengers, much of it, I believe, being new or ‘ induced 5 traffic,” said Mr Ster’ing.— Wellington Press Association 1 telegram.:
