UNEMPLOYMENT.

TO THB EDITOR. Sir, —May I ask what our astute and levelheaded ratepayers are thinking about in regard to our unemployed? A week or so ago a relief trotting meeting was hold at Forbury Park, and I believe some £5,000 was handed over to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and to the Unemployed Relief Committee, which is undoubtedly doing great work. Unemployment is a national problem, and it behoves our leading citizens to keep hammering away at the Government for remedial measures. Our men do not want charity j they demand what is their

common right—work; and work, I ant sure, can be found for hundreds right here in this fair city of ours. May I suggest that some large numbers of men be employed reclaiming our fore, shore? Surely this would be work of a productive nature! Also a number could be employed .repairing sea walls and combing soft portions of the cliffs on the Portobello road.'to minimise slips that always occur during winter periods. It seems as though our Government is attempting to evade the issue by pushing the burden on to the shoulders of our City Fathers, as it is offering a two to one subsidy. Surely our corporation -played its part last winter, and as our ratepayers condemned a loan proposal recently, emphasising the fact that unemployment Is a Government issue, I say once more hammer away and let them see that Dunedin, like other centres, has too layge a number of unemployed.—l am 4 etc., Dunedin/.Wake Ur.* June 16, ■ ■
