Mr Julian Foster, the United States Trade Commissioner for New Zealand, is now on his first visit to Dunedin for the purpose of getting into personal touch with exporters and importers. He came by the first express yesterday, was busy on his work all day. Tomorrow he goes on to Invercargill, but lie will return on Monday in time to meet the executive of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce in the evening. In the course of a chat this morning Mr Foster mentioned that Mr Herbert Hoover, one of the favored candidates for the United States Presidency, is Secretary of Commerce, and very actively interested in bringing together the world’s most useful thoughts m regard to trade. Mr W. R Gahagan, a prominent member of the Manchester Unity, went bade to Christchurch by train to-day after a holiday in Otago. Mr J. Carey, of Christchurch, came up from Invercargill to-day and proceeded to his home by the same train. Mr D. M. Fnstier, of Marshall’s Proprietary, left by train this morning, bound for New Plymouth and Stratford. , , Mr H. R. Harper, of the Victoria Insurance, went by the 11.34 train today to attend* the’underwriters’ annual conference at Auckland. Mr A. H. Fisher (Standard) and Mr Burt (National), the other Dunedin delegates,are further on the journey. Mr J. W. Collins, Secretary of the Department of industries and Commerce, arrived in Dunedin yesterday afternoon on departmental business. Representatives from various local cricket clubs met last evening for the purpose of farewelling Mr J. H. A. MThee, who is about to leave on a trip to the Old Country via- America. The various members referred in appreciative terms to the work done by Mr MThee for the boys, and in presenting him with a set of pipes and a goldmounted pouch they all wished him a happy voyage. The Wellington Presbytery, through a motion passed on Tuesday night, offered heartiest congratulations to Mr Justice Smith, recently appointed to the Supreme Court bench. Speakers paid testimony to Mr Smith’s work in the church, and it was stated that ho was the third Wellington minister’s son to be appointed to the Bench, others being Mr Justice Sahnond and Mr Justice MacGregor. Tribute to the character and work of the late Senior-sergeant W. E. Lewis was paid in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court on Monday, both by the Bench and by the police. Before the court began its work Mr H. P, Lawry, S.M., said that, although Senior-ser-geant Lewis had been in Christchurch for only a short time, all who had come into contact with him had been struck with the very fair way in which he carried out his duties. “Anything that could be said in an accused man’s favor,” said Mr Lawry, “ was never left unsaid. Senior-sergeant Lewis was cut off in the prime of life, and his death came as a great shock. _ The other magistrates wish to be associated with mo in my remarks, and our full sympathy goes to his widow.” On behalf of the police, Sub-inspector J. Fitzpatrick endorsed Mr Lawry’s remarks, and thanked him and the other_ magistrates for their sympathy, which he would convey to Airs Lewis.
