SETS UNDER CELL FLOOR WARDER RESIGNS. After the discovery of two wireless sets in prisoners’ colls at Pentridge Gaol, a warder tendered his resignation. ... , Detectives investigating the suspected smuggling of contraband into the gaol discovered prisoners’ letters in the homo of a notorious ex-convict. It is alleged that the letters were addressed in the handwriting of a warder, and when he was taxed ho wrote out his resignation, though ho did not admit anv of the accusations. The warder was formerly a member of the Police Force, and had been a penal officer for two or three years. Three months ago another ox-police-man warder was accused of smuggling whisky into the gaol for prisoners, hut the alleged offence was not proved. 'The warder, was transferred to a country gaol. In the letters found by ho detectives the handwriting on the envelopes was different from that in the contents. The wireless sets wore found under the flooring of the cells, and were capable of picking up all broadcasting services within the State. It is alleged that friends of the prisoners in whose nosscssion the sets were found had paid a warder £2 for carrying in the head ’phones.
