TENDERS FOR POWER UNIT

RECOMMENDATIONS BY COMMITTEE The amended tenders for the power unit at the dam have now been reported on by tho city electrical engineer, and the E.P. and L. Committee makes a recommendation in respect thereto. The original tenders were lodged in October, 1926, but owing to the delay in the erection of the dam it became necessary to redesign important portions of the plant, and send particulars to tenderers at Homo and abroad to enable them to revise their proposals and prices. Six tenders were received for tho turbine and nine for the generator. Of the former four were for British plant, one for American, and one foreign, while for the latter five were for British generators, two for American, and two foreign., Tho two lowest tenderers for the generators were for British plant, the next two American, and tho following two British. The lowest original tender for the turbine was also British, then a Swiss, then another British, with _ American, British, and Swedish following in that order. The prices vary considerably, and although it is not possible to recommend the lowest price in each case, the committee is able to recommend British tenders in both instances, which in the opinion of the engineers will provide a plant giving the best combination. The tenders recommended are as follows:

_ For the turbine, amended specification for horizontal type; Messrs Boving and Co., Ltd. For the generator, amended specification for horizontal type: The National Electrical and Engineering Co., Ltd., for plant manufactured by The British Thomson and Houston Company.

The only portion of the plant that would not be made in Britain is the governor, valued at about £1,300, which will be made in Sweden, Other sections of the complete plant are a travelling crane, transformers, and switch gear. Tenders for these are also in hand, and a recommendation will be submitted to council at an early date if the foregoing proposals are approved.
