GOLD FROM THE AIR

According to a correspondent in the ‘Daily Express’ (London), the United States Assay Office in Now York is literally picking gold out of the air through a device which recovers metal that formerly went up the chimney in the fumes from the smelting of bar gold. It is stated that 600 oz of gold, valued at nearly £2,480, have thus far been recovered by this novel device. The gold-bearing fumes from the'-fur-nace are driven up the chimney stack by a giant electric fan, and pass between two metal plates highly charged with electricity. Gold particles in the gases become electrified and settle on the electrodes, whence they are shaken into a collecting compartment below.
