Replying to a suggestion in the House of Representatives that steps might be taken to ascertain whether the expense of electrifying the Lyttelton tunnel could be avoided by tho use of smokeless fuel, the Minister of Railways (Right Hon. J. C. Contes) stated that the hot fumes given off with locomotive exhaust were not eliminated on engines burning the special fuel. “The complete avoidance of the unpleasantness complained of by passengers travelling through the Lyttelton tunnel can be attained most effectively by electrification,” added Mr Coates. “While the smoke nuisance has an important bearing on the decision to inaugurate the electrification of suburban lines, an important consideration is the necessity which exists for accelerating the passenger and goods services on the Christchurch-Lyttolton section. ’ ’
