The death sentence passed on Smith lias been commuted to imprisonment fur the term of his natural life. [Following the death at Junco _of Clare Prow.sc, aged 17, a telephonist, Jack Smith, aged IS, a telegraph operator, was arrested, It. was slated that Smith had been paying addresses to the girl and was repulsed. It is believed- that she was attacked with a razor. She rushed into the house where she was boarding, covered with blood, and died shortly after. The police visited a room at the Jnnee Hotel and arrested Smith, who was said to have had two gashes, one being in the temple. ITe was bleeding profusely and was' on tho point of collapse, and was sent to hospital. Ho reeov=orod. and at his trial was found guilty and sentenced to death.]
WICK AT NEWCASTLE
SYDNEY, January 8. (Received January 8, at 10.20 n.m.)
The State Cabinet has decided to construct a floating dock at "Newcastle, at a probable cost of £400,00! .1. Some lime ago the Federal Government oll'erecl to subsidise a dock to the extent of £135,000. Mr Lang asked Mr Bruce to increase the subsidy, but the hitter refused. The Government now proposes to construct the dock without .Federal assistance.
