[FItOM OUB COEHKfiPOMDKNT.J Tho monthly meeting of the Mosgiol School Committee was held on Wednesday last, Mir J. S. M'Cartnoy presiding over a full attendance of members. Mr J. C. Smith wrote resigning his position as first assistant at the school, he having received an appointment at Albany Street. Ho thanked the committee for its uniform courtesy during tho whole time he hod been at the school. It was resolved that the committee cuter a strong protest to tho board against Mr Smith being allowed to leave until such time as the proficiency examinations laid been completed, . An application was received for the use of tho gymnasium ono evening each week for a class for wrestling and ju-jitsu. It was decided to grant the applicants tho use of the room every Tuesday night at a nominal rout. Tho Rector reported that tho attendance had boon marred by continued bad weather and sickness. The roll number had risen to 353 as against 305 in May, whilst tho average attendance had risen from 812 to 324, raising the school a grade, and thus entitling tho school to an additional assistant. The following donations had been received towards the deliueascone fund;—An anonymous donor, £1; collected at football match, 18s; Taieri Expansion League, £5, A thoughtful oiler was received from two local tradesmen (Messrs Ercw and Swallow) to entertain the school football team at a social evening. The committee grentfully accepted tho offer, and_ fixed Friday, Octobe rl6, for the occasion, ROAD MAKING. At the invitation of tho Ford Tractor Company, a party of Mosgiel councillors journeyed to, the Alain North road on Wednesday last for an exhibition of road making with modern, up-to-date plant. The method adopted proved most interesting. TAIERI ROVERS. The wind-up of the football season for tho Taion Rovers Club was celebrated on Thursday evening with a progressive euchre party, followed by a dance. The winners of tho tournament were Mr T. H. Gonrlay and Miss Clara Cameron. During an interval the presentation of a Mosgiel rug was made to Air G. Hendry, who had undertaken tho secretarial duties so efficiently during tho season, and also to Air T. Cnbitt, who hot! acted a.> couch for the team. Medals for the. best hack and forward were presented as follows; —Second grade, J. L. Oliver and H. Patterson; fourth grade, J, Rogers and J. R. Brown.
