ARCHERS AT MONTROSE

A large crowd gathered at the Links of Montrose on July 10, when the Royal Company of Archers (King’s Bodyguard for Scotland) hold their ninth competition for the Alontroso Silver Arrow, presented in 1850 by the Provost, Magistrates, and Town Council of the burgh. The archers marched in procession to the Links, headed by the pipe hand of the Royal Archers, and thousands of spectators witnessed the shoot. The Alontroso Silver. Arrow was carried on a halberd by the town officer, wearing his scarlet uniform. In accordance with custom, the corporation presented the archers with a riddle of wine, and Provost Foreman at the dinner presented the -arrow to the winner, Professor J. Y. Simpson, Edinburgh.
