ABERDEEN TOWN COUNCIL SCENE. A scene occurred at Aberdeen Town Council between Cr Fraser Alackintosh (a Labor member) and laird Provost Meff, which resulted in the councillor being removed from the Council Chamber by the police. The incident arose in connection with a motion by Cr Alackintosh asking for an investigation into an alleged contravention of the Shops Act, 1912, by a town councillor, and an explanation as to why no prosecution was instituted.
Before Cr Alackintosh spoke to his motion, the Lord Provost ruled it out of order as incompetent. To this ruling Cr Alackintosh at once demurred, demanding the Lord Provost’s reasons for his decision.
Lord Provo;t Aloff replied that it was not incumbent upon him to give any reason for ruling a motion out of order, and requested Cr Alackintosh to resume his seat.
This the latter refused to do, despite repeated requests, and a delicate situation arose.
Following on repented refusals by Cr Alackintosh to obey the chair, the .Lord Provost moved that the councillor bo removed from the meeting. This was carried by a. majority; but when an elderly town sergeant _ advanced to carry out the council’s decree, Cr Mackintosh refused to go along with him, and requested that the police be summoned. Eventually the Lord Provost sent for the police. After the councillor’s departure the meeting by a majority of 14 votes to 5 carried a resolution suspending him from further meetings of the council until he had apologised.
