EMPIRE WIRELESS

THE BEAM SYSTEM

ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright,

LONDON, August 13. The Postmaster-General (Sir William Mitdhell-Thompson) announces _ that a site ,at Skegness for the receiving station for the beam wireless service to Australia and India has been placed at the disposal of the contractors, who are due to complete the station and also the transmitting station at Grimsby on May 8 next.—Reuter.

THE NEXT STAGE IN WIRELESS. “I think I am justified in saying, as a residt of the experiments which I have carried on fop a number of years, and which culminated in 1923 and 1924, that a combination of short electric waves with what is known as the ‘ beam system ’ is likely to bring about what amounts to nothing less than a revolution in the methods > of commercial long-distance communication,” writes Signor Marconi in the Wireless Magazine.’ A very important result of my last experiments was the ascertaining that, when suitable reflectors were used at both ends—that is, one reflector to concentrate and project the waves in a beam and the other to focus them at the receiving end and the . receiving aerial—the energy so received was some 200 times greater than when no reflectors were used. I am now convinced that the day is fast approaching when beam stations, using short waves and employing a fraction of the power iitilised in the present high-power stations, and •with much lower and fewer masts, will be able to carry on communication at practically any time between any two points of the earth’s surface and at much higher speeds than is no.w possible. We may be on the threshold of a day when broadcasting will have its range enormously increased. Within it year or two the voice' of the King of England, for example, may ho easily and clearly heard by millions of his fubjects in places as far apart as India, Australia, Canada, and South Africa.”
