MOTOR BANDIT
CHINESE LOSE £92. A motor bandit introduced American crime methods into Sydney recently, when he made good his escape with £92 (writes tho Sydney correspondent of the Auckland ‘ Star '). The exploit was carried out at the shop of a Chinese, fruiterer in Oxford street, Darlingliurst, shortly after 7.30 p.m. There were two Chinese in the, shop at the time, and they were cleaning up preparatory to closing the, shop for the night,. A motor car slopped outside, and a man came, in, asking to be allowed to use the telephone. At tho time, one of the Chinese was counting a roll of notes on the desk, and had just reached the, total, £92, when tho stranger dropped iho telephone receiver before he had asked for a number. Leaping across tho shop, ho struck tho Chinese a heavy blow on the jaw, grabbed the notes, and was outside the door again before iiie other Chinese could do anything to prevent the daring theft. The car was still there, the. engine running, and he dashed across the pavement, with several Chinese in pursuit. They were too far behind him to have any chance of stopping him reaching the car, and the vehicle rolled away. Tile matter was reported to the police immediately, and detectives were at, the shop inside five minutes. They got, a description of the man who had carried out, the sensational coup, and arranged for the injured Chinese to be attended to. Later tho same night the police arrested the driver of a car which is alleged to have, been used in connection with the raid. So far they have been unable to locate the man who was the principal in the affair, and the money, of course, has not been recovered.
