PORTOBELLO SHOW

PENINSULA A. AND P. SOCIETY. GOOD ENTRIES. Tho forty-seventh annual show of the Peninsula A. and P. Society was held on Saturday at Portobollo, and attracted a largo entry and a good gathering of the public. Ther e were some fine rings of cattle. In the Jersey section Messrs Hellyer Bros, secured both championships. Some specially good specimens of tho Ayrshire breed were also in evidence. Mr James Weir and Mr John Dick (Pukehiki) were the most prominent in tire prize-lists. There were some good cross-brcds shown, the milch cows being of particularly good quality. It was noticeable that purcbreds were entered in some of the classes in this section, and the judge was of opinion that tho rules should ho amended in tiro direction of excluding all pure-breds from competition in the cross-bred class. Sheep were said by the judge (Mr Alex. Scott) (n bo a fair average lot. Most of the woolly sheep were, however, in his opinion, too low in condition for show purposes, although little fault could bo found with breeding or typo. The freezing sheep were, above the '.stipulated weight, hut otherwise, wore a credit to their exhibitors. Corning to tiro horse section, the champion Clydesdale, stallion was Mr A. H. Hall's Shunter's Footprint, who is by Shunter from Pride of Springfield, who was sired by tire imported horse Winterseuglr Hero. Tho working wore well filled, and horses well qualified to take their place in any show ring gained the awards. The hack classes were quite up to tho standard of Otago shows. In heavy hacks Mr F. J. Conn had a welldeserved win, and in the 11.0 class Mr A. F. Snraill secured the red ticket. Mr F. J. Conn also scored in the dog cart and lady's hack classes. Two protests were lodged during the day. Messrs Hellyer Bros, protested against Mr M. Geary securing the Wailaki Dairy Company’s trophy for tho cow giving the most huiler-fal, on tho ground that one of the tests, 9.7, was not consistent with the other test, 4.0, and was in excess of any recognised test. The second protest related to tho class for a, pair of draught horses, in which Mr M. Geary was awarded first prize. Mr J. Casey, winner of the blue ticket, protested against tho first award on the ground that no entire was allowed to be shown except in the section provided for that purpose. Both protests will bn considered in tho course of a day or two. The show was well conducted, Mr IT. Allan's (secretary) work being invaluable. Prize-list as under: HORSES. draughts. Judge,: Mr J.
