TYPOGRAPHICAL DISPUTE
DOMINION AWARD ASKED FOR. [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, December 9. The demand of the Now Zealand Federated Typographical Industrial Association of Workers for a dominion award formed the subject of Conciliation Council proceedings this morning. The application of the Southland county newspapers for exemption was referred lo the Arbitration Court. The union asked tho following rates of pay :—Day news operators, £o 15s per week; day jobbing operators, £7 15s; for night operators, 20 per cent, extra; casual operators, 4s per hour for day work and 5s for night work. The employers offered for day operators for the four cities £5 5s per week, outside the cities £5 Is, and other rates in proportion; casuals, Os per hour daytime, and 3s 6d night time. The union assessors at the Conciliation Council said they were asking for an increase in wages because the newspapers, and the printing trade generally, were in a prosperous condition, and the employees wished to share, in that prosperity. The employers replied that if the. increases were granted the cost of jobbing would go up, because tho increase would be passed on.
