Tuesday, December 9. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender was fined 12s 6d, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. GIVEN A CHANCE. Alexander Campbell was charged with being deemed to be an idle and disorderly person in that he bad insufficient visible lawful means of support. Senior-sergeant Matliiesnn said that the accused was arrested yesterday. He told the constable that he had no money, and had un place to sleep. He had walked from Ettrick to Port Chalmers, and from Port Chalmers to Dunedin, <md during the two days that he had been in Dunedin he had been sleeping out. _ He bad deserted from his ship some time ago. and had squandered all his money in liquor. The accused, who looked a- pitiful object in the dock, made a plaintive appeal for a chance. “ What will you do if you are given a chance?” asked the magistrate. “I will go into the country,” replied accused, “ and if necessary I will walk hark to Ettrirk, On this condition the accused was convicted and discharged. Percy Frederick Galland pleaded guilty to a charge of having failed to comply with the terms of his release on proba tion. „ „ The Probation Officer (Mr F. G. Gumming) said that the accused was placed on probation on January 39. 1924. The oin dit ions of his release, were that he had to abstain from intoxicating liquor, and also make restitution. He bad been hounded out of several hotels by the detectives, and had been decidedly bad in reporting. He had only reported twice, and though hr had seen him personally it had bad i.o effect at all. William Francis Weaver was charged with having cm December 4 received 12s on terms requiring him to account for same to Thomas George Spain. He pleaded guiltv. Chief-detective Lewis said that accused had been employed by Spain, and had been given a basket of bakers smallgnodfi in sell, and also 10s small change. He had been hoarding in a house in Princes street, and was owing £8 for board. He seemed to be roaming about without aim or object, and ap} eared too lazy to work. The bakehouse had been broken into, and inquiries had been made bv Detectives Farcpmarson and Lean, and from their inquiries in this matter the present charge had been brought. The accused’s parents were residing at Roxburgh, and he was twenty-one years of ago. “He was! remanded until Thursday in order to give the. probation officer time to report. ALLEGED THEFT.

Victor Albert Dent alias Albert Victor William Dent alias Albert Harold William Williams was charged with the theft of a suit valued at £8 Bs. the property of Christopher Vickers. He was further charged with the theft of a gold ring valued at 30s, tho property of Robert Westrnp. He pleaded guilty to both informations.

Chief-detective Lewis said the accused made a practice of going into boardinghouses and staying amongst students for some time, collecting all he could get, and then disappearing. Ho had been running about in motor ears. He had a very had record, and went close to being an habitual criminal.
