CHRISTCHURCH, July 20,

The acceptances received to-night for the loading events at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National _ Meeting can be claimed to be quite satisfactory. Ranui was withdrawn from the Grand National Steeplechase, but as he is engaged in the Beaufort and Lincoln Steeplechases he may be seen at the meeting. In all there are seventeen who bavo survived the first payment, against twenty last year. The heavy from (he Winter Cup is rather disappointing, more especially as a large number ot the horses which were not paid up for are either of a good class or are very promising. The most noteworthy defections are Surveyor, Strategy, Haurangi, Curlfqrm, Harrier, Tinohoro, Kao Tane, and Prinze Fcrouz. In all twenty-eight stand their ground, against thirty-two last ycar.^ A much happier state of affairs exists in regard to tho Grand National Hurdles, tlioro° being both numbers and quality. The hurdle races at the meeting should bo brimful of interest. The nine at the head of the handicap have accepted. Royal Abbey, Snake, Ma Bella, Mandrake, and Mililaire being the only withdrawals of note. The field at this *tago numbers twenty-seven, compared with last year’s total of twenty-two.

The nominations for the subsidiary events show an increase on last year’s total, the figures being 412 against 397. The new races, the Cashmere Plato and the Longbeach Handicap, have drawn very useful entries, ajid should prove much more profitable and successful races than those for which they were substituted. The jumpers’ races have all filled very satisfactorily, while the flat races have all the essentials for providing spirited contests. A comparison of the entries for the principal races, as compared with last year, is as follows, last year’s figures being given in parentheses:—Trial Hurdles, 15 (14); Jumpers’ Flat Race, 26 (22); Hunt Club Cup, 20 (17); August Handicap, 22 (33); Spreydon Hurdles, 18 (16); Islington Handicap, 16 (18); Heathoote Handicap, 30 (46); and Styx Hurdles, 27 (16).

TOT ALLS ATOR TAXATION.

The following resolution passed by the Oamaru Jockey Club has been sent to the Government, members of Parliament, and all the country racing clubs in the dominion:—“That this club takes strong exception of. the proposals made by the chairman of the Pacing Conference (Sir George Clifford) for a reduction in the taxation on stakes and dividends ns a means of relief to clubs, as these proposals would not relieve the financial position of the clubs in any way; and that this chib strongly recommends that a reduction lie made in the totalisator and amusement taxes, as these fall directly upon the clubs and are solely responsible for the financial difficulties in which so many country clubs find themselves to-day. From the point of view of the Treasury the removal of the totalisator and amusement, taxes, which totalled £153,325 last season, would not.- affect, the revenue of the, country to nearly the same extent as the removal of the dividends and stakes taxes, which totalled £290,116. In the event of the Government not being prepared to forgo the whole of the totalisator and amusement tax, this chib recommends that a graduated tax be imposed upon the chibs whereby the first £25,000 invested on the totalisator should be exempt from the totalisator tax.
