COAL SELLING METHODS
SIGNIFICANT PROSECUTIONS.

WELLINGTON, July 20. Cases of mora than usual interest to the housewife were heard at the 'Magistrate’s Court, when Mr R. T. Bailey, who appeared for the Labor Department, stated that they were the first cases taken under the provisions of the Weights and Measures Act Amendment, 1922, and that the department, intended to strictly enforce tho provisions of that Act and its regulations, so that, it would be most advisable for coal merchants and hawkers who sell coal and coke to carefully study tho requirements of these kogulations governing the sale and delivery of this commodity. Tho first firm charged was Foley and Jordan, who pleaded guilty to delivering coal ;n bags not properly closed and labelled.
Mr Bailey said it was important that those purchasing coal and vood should know tho weight of tho coal and coke. The only means whereby purchasers could know that they were getting the correct weight was by moans of the coal and coke being weighed, and then properly secured and labelled accordingly. A. heavy penalty was not asked for, tho cases" being taken as a warning. His Worship convicted and ordered tire payment of costs (Is). J. H. Golsworthy, for failing to provide a proncr docket and entry for delivered coal, was also ordered to pay costs. R. Pratt, ior delivering coal in un closed and unlahelled bags, was «>rd°red to pay costs (7s); and the Wellington South. Coal, Wood, and Coke Company was treated similarly.
