CITY GAS SUPPLY

FURNACE FLOOR FLOODED. PROBABLE SHORTAGE. The gas supply of the city has also been seriously affected by tho flood waters, which yesterday flooded the furnaoo floor to a depth of about, 2ft and almost extinguished the furnaces. Manufacturing was stopped about 5 p.m. To-day a great deal of water had been pumped out, and tho fires wove kept going, although one flue is still under water, and the gas engineer (Mr Hnngerford) cannot yet say when ho will start manufacturing again. At any rate, there will still be a little gas left at 12 o'clock to-night. Even- if the, plant is set going again to-day, it has had such a soaking that it will not be able to work at normal capacity for at least one or two days. WAIPORI WORKS UNDAMAGED, THOUGH FLOOD SECOND LARGEST ON RECORD. Mr M. Henderson, city electrical engineer, informed us this afternoon, in answer to an inquiry, that there was 9ft of water on tho spillway at tho Waipori weir, this being tho greatest record since May of 1917, when the measurement was 15ft. But the rush has not done any mischief, and the staff has managed to carry on all right. Several minor mishaps are reported from various places—a pole washed out on the (Milton line, one or two polos put out of action in the Leith Valley, and a few slips about the recent excavations.
