PORT CHALMERS FAIRLY FREE.
THE RESERVOIR IMPERILLED. COTTAGE WASHED DOWN GULLY. Port Chalmers escaped with minor damage to property. Stevenson and Cook's engineering works suffered through flood water.from the hillside, which choked the drainage. A torrent rushed through the machine shop and across the road, carrying debris into the old-dock, which had 2ft of detritus on the bottom when pumped out this morning for tho docking of tlie trawler. This firm's moulding shop was also damaged by a slip. The football ground is a sheet of water, and at Carey's Bay a cottage occupied by Gilbert Scott and family was washed down tho gully to the railway line. The occupants escaped uninjured. Another slip damaged a stable belonging to Peter Lawson. There are several slips along tho roads. At Sawyers Bay, with its larger watershed, the flood is more pronounced. Roads and culverts have been damaged, scrub from tho hillside and landslips blocking a free outlet. Port Chalmers reservoir is imperilled in the backwash of water. On Sunday evening the borough supply was cut off, while the sluices were opened to reduce the level in the reservoir. Nevertheless it overflowed, channels being damaged and nij'ns exposed.
