CRIMINAL SITTINGS
GISBORNE. Henry Edward Dennett was sentenced to three years' imprisonment and again declared an habitual criminal for attempted rape. Tukawhina Reiahama was to three years' probation for the theft of £8 from the person. In delivering tho sentence Mr Justice Reed said that young Maoris released on probation were under the impression that they bad won their case, and were inclined to swank on the results of the trial. If the accused had been a European he would have got probation, so he didn't, like to make a racial distinction; .also the accused had served at the wax. The accused would be required to bo prohibited for three years and pay the costs of tho prosecution, amounting to £23. AUCKLAND. At tho Supreme Court Mr Justice Stringer refused the application by Stuart Christie for a new trial on the charge on which he was sentenced to three years' imprisonment for unlawfully carnally knowing a girl of thirteen. The application was made on the ground that the verdict was against the weight of tho evidence.
