EDUCATION BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Otago Edu cation Board commmenced this morning Present—Messrs J. Wallace (chairman) J Horn, J. H._ Wilkinson, R. H. Todd,’ P, M’Kinlay, W. R. Brugh, and the Hon! D i. Fleming. MOTIONS OF CONDOLENCE.
The Chairman said the board had the melancholy duty of recording motions ot condolence with the relatives of two very prominent educationists who had passed ln tl ’- d persons of their late inspector Mr W. is. Fitzgerald and of Dr Gilrav. Anything he could say ot these two men would be no news to the board. The great work they had done for education "’was known to all. The board were more closely associated with Mr Fitzgerald, who was truly one of the pioneers in education in Dtago. He would move that the board record their regret at the death of Mr Fitzgerald and Dr Gilray, and convey their condolences with the relatives.
Mr Fleming (chief inspector), on behalf of the inspectorate, said that Mr Fitzgerald had been a pioneer, particularly in the training of teachers. The Hon. D. T. Fleming said his acquaintance with Mr Fitzgerald commenced in ’66. He was a great educationist, and a man of noble and big-hearted nature, who was always welcome in every school He left a family who were imbued with his high ideals. Dr Gilray was an educationist whoso loss would be deplored by the whole province. The motions were- carried in silence, all members standing. WORKS. Anderson Bay Committee’s application for the connection of the school drain with the main sewer was agreed to, the architect reporting favorably. The architect reported on the heating apparatus at Kaitangata School. He recommended a further outlay of £4O to effect improvement, and suggested that the committee might assist.—H was resolved that the architect be empowered to put things right, and the committee bo asked how much they will contribute. The Education Department intimated that a grant for the reinstatement of the Merino Downs School had been sanctioned. The department also intimated that a grant had been sanctioned for the acquisition of an additional area for school ground at B-enhar
