Our Christchurch special wdres that Mr James Rowe, a well-known Christchurch builder, and president of the Builders’ Association, is dead. He was at one time a well-known cricketer, and one of the earliest members of the Sydenham Club. He was also a prominent Freemason.

Mr A. L. T. Jones, accountant at the Christchurch branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr T. R. Mowat, late manager of the bank’s Ashburton branch, and he will take up his duties about the end of the month. Air J. Mac Gibbon, of the Invercargill branch, will take Mr Jones’s place in Christchurch. —Special from Christchurch. Seven days’ leave of absence on account of illness was yesterday granted by the Legislative Council to- the Hon. Messrs Simpson and Parata. - Mr A. C. Bretherton, chief clerk to the local Deputy Public Trustee, Dunedin, has been appointed chief examiner for the Public Trust Office, and leaves for Wellington In three weeks’ time.

His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) and the city solicitor (Mr W. C. MacGregor) left for Wellington by the second express to-day to give evidence before the Local Bills Committee, who meet to-morrow, relative to the Dunedin Drainage Board Bill, now before Parliament It is understood that Cr Small, who is at present in Wellington, will also give evidence. Mr A, Slinger (engineer of the Dunedin Drainage Board) and Mr J. C. Stephens (the board’s solicitor) also proceeded to Wellington to-day to give evidence on behalf of the Drainage Board. Mr W. T. MTarlane (Mayor of St. Kilda) went up on the same errand. The chairman of the board (Mr J. S. Douglas) went to Wellington to attend a meeting of the Plumbers’ Board, which is to be held to-morrow, and if time permits he will give evidence. An old and respected Port Chalmers resident, in' the person of Mr James Farquharson, passed away this week at the age of 90 years. He was born at Kirknewton, Edinburgh, in 1825, and landed at Port Chalmers in September, 1858, with his wife and) infant daughter, from the ship Jura. Shortly after his arrival he purchased a farm, where he resided up to the time of his death. To the last his memory was excellent, and he always enjoyed recounting experiences of his early pioneering days. His wife predeceased by five years. He is survived by a family of five daughters and one son.
