MRS WOODHOUSE'S PAINTINGS

Thirty-five paintings by Mrs Woodhouse arc hung in the Dresden Company's concert hall for the inspection of persons who think of purchasing. Several already bear the red stamp that signifies "sold." Mrs Woodhouse's ability as a painter in ■water colors is -well proven, for she is .a periodical contributor to the Otago Art Society's exhibition, and regular patrons, know,- that when the eye becomes a little, timi of pretty things and experiments in high color' it is a relief to turn to something by this lady, since her landscapes are never at furnace heat, but refreshingly natural, besides which Mrs Woodliouse has correct judgment in choosing subjects, and often sees in the midst of the commonplace a bit that is worth " doing." The works now hung fairly reveal Mrs Woodhouse's taste and skill. A few may lie mentioned. 'A Country Road' is distinguishable by its expansivenoss and its atmosphere."'Karitane' and "Long Beach' are, fimall canvases aglow with sunshine. 'Near Christchurch' is of lovely quality, and the treatment is most sincere. In 'A Golden Willow' we see that the artist | confidently handles bright color without splashing it about. 'The Cottage',, is ! drawn firmly, and the accessories have the softness of nature. ' Pine Trees' is a. charming yet simple patch of hillside. ' Waitati Beach' is delivered to the eye straight from the hands of the Creator. It and 'The Wild Duck's Haunt' are marvellously faithful. Another 'Waitati' subject is full of sparkle, the lighting effects being very cleverly put on to the canvas. A couple of harvest scenes and 'Mount Peel Road' are also well worthy of inspection. We heartily and frankly commend, the collection as a whole to the notice of connoisseurs.
