SIR G. REID ENTERTAINED

A PLEA FOR SACRIFICE AND THE BURIAL OF DOMESTIC STRIFE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, April 30. (Received May 1, at Q.a^m.) The Colonial Institute gav#'a luncheon to welcome Sir G. Reid. Thero was a record gathering, including the AgentsGenerai, Lord Emmott, Admirals Henderson and Fremantle, General Hutton, Sir Albert Spicer, and Sir J. Fuller. Sir G. Reid said that- the lessons learnt in the crisis of 1893 were seen in the stability of Australian finance to-day. Australia was never more progressive or prosperous. Sir George made an eloquent plea for self-sacrifice and farsightedness in the development of the Empire. This indirect reference to Ulster was loudly cheered. " Looking around the Empire," said Sir G. Reid ; "it is not India or Africa or the Overseas Dominions where unrest is found. Englishmen are an extraordinary people. Though they cannot agree among themselves they can manage the affairs of 360 millions of people." He concluded with' an appeal to Imperial statesmen to hold the Empire free of internal conflagrations, and not to dig up black hatreds at a moment when the moss was growing green over them.
