MILITARY AT MATARAE
TO-DAY'S WOEK. [From Otto Ows Rbfokteb.^ MATARAE CAMP, April 27. To-day furnished a day for tit whole force, ths infantry, mounted men, „ and artillery being ouf all day in a brigade attack. The seen© around Moun* Ross was exceedingly busy, the Engineers strongly entrenching a position to be held in Wednesday's maiUßuvres. Colonel Bauchop went to town ti'k afternoon in order to meet General and will return with him to-morrow, Lieutenant-colonel Will had the whole of the medical officers out to-day inspecting the manoeuvre area, and discovering the easiest routes and fords for conveying the wounded to camp. This is Dr Will's last camp in Otago, as he leaves for WeEington at once to take up his post as Director of Medical Service for the Dominion. The news of the death of Trooper Philpott in the Dunedin Hospital, as the result of collision with two other troopers on Saturday, has caused universal regret. Another accident occurred to-day, Trooper Hall (of Thornbury), 7th Mounted Rifles, being kicked bv a horse, and Sustaining a compound fracture of the leg. He was taken to Dunedin this afternoon.
