HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT.
WELLINGTON, April 27. The High Commissioner cabled from London on April 25 (note, the quotations, unices otherwise specified, are the- average market prices on spot):— Mutton.—Market becoming more depressed on account of large arrivals. The demand has been chiefly for light-weight Canterbury, at 4§d per )b ; heavv weights, difficult to sell at 3gd; North Island, 4jd for light weight. Lamb. —Fair demand for better grades. 'Hie market has been unfavorably affected by the lower prices of mutton." Canterbury twos, j heavy weights, 5d ; other than Canterbury, 5 15-16 d for light weight. . Beef.—'Market very dull; quotations nominal. Hinds, 4-gd.; fores, 3|d. The supplies of American chilled beoi are large. Chilled hinds, 4|d ; fores, 3 5-16 d. Butter. —Market quiet, and rather steadier. Danish, in fair demand, 114s to 116s per ewt; New, Zealand, fair demand, 1066 to 108s; unsalted, 114s to 118s: Australian, 100s to 103s; exceptionally choice, 108s ; Argentine, market slow, 98s to 102s ; Siberian, in poor demand, 99s to 102s; American creameries, 98s to 100s. Cheese.—Market firmer, with fair demand for New Zealand. Canadian white, per cwt, 68a to 70s; colored, 69s to 71s; New Zealand white, 61s 6d to 62s : colored, 64s to 64 6d; Australian, white, 59s 6d to 60s; colored, 62s to 635.
Hemp.—-Market excited on account of Mexican crisis, and prices have been advancing rapidly. The Manila market is firmer, and shippers are holding off. Fair current, £2B per ton; May to July shipments, £529. Thei output from Manila for the -week was 20,000 bales. The New Zealand market is very firm, and business has been done in high points at- £25 10s. To-day\s values are: June to Julv shipments, about £26 10s; fair, £24 10* landed is nominally unchanged, but no off era are obtainable from Mexico, as it appears probable that the war is likely to prevent the shipment. The stocks in March, 1914, were 61,334 bales, against 112,265 bales last year. The shipments during March, 1914, were 113.779 bales, against 48,379 in March of 1913. Tow.—Market firmer. Spot sales this week include: Third grade, per ton, £l3; second grade, £l4. Wool.—Market firm, with a hardening tendency for merinos and fine crose-breds of all grades. Prospect* are favorable.
