TUAPEKA NEWS

Quite a representative gathering of ladies and gentlemen met in the Town Hall on. luesoay , ng ht to show their interest in a foment winch has been set afoot to im%*'n T, h "? R " al P° s 'twn of the Tua.peka. Braes Band. Mr H. Hart, who : occupied the chair, explained that some om,£ "S°\. whcn .the band had been equipped with new instruments, part of the purchase money had been provided by about a dozen ardent supporters of the band. A small part of that loan had been returned, but there still remained a debt ot a little over £IOO. and as there war, no doubt at all that it was in the interests ot the community as a whole- that there should be a band in the town, and that its property should be free of debt, he thought the ime had arrived when the community should be appealed to. A canvass had already teen made, and, judging from the number of promise of assistance, and from the tact that so large a number had responded to the invitation to attend tha< evening sheeting, the chairman felt quite jvslined in prophesying that the bazaar which it had been been decided would beheld on the 17th, 16th, and 19th Apr-], would be a huge success. Discussion and suggestions were then invited, and eventually it was decided that a committee of management be set up, ccneistincr of all those present, with power to add to their nvmber: Messrs W. Fisher, F. Robertson, r r ; T -! V , urr ' S- Gli ""> E - L - DartOn, J. B. MKinlay. H. H. Learv, and G. H Marn£' fcla . lr ' cs Stokes, Firth, and Moore. J.ne following ladies were placed in charge or the various departments, with authority to choose their own assistants:—Fancy work and plain sewing—Mesdames H.Hart, Alex. M'Lean, J. B. Thompson, Miss -Vi'Kay; home industries (comprising jams, pickles, preserves, cakes, pies, fruit, vegetables, etc.)—Mesdames J. K. Simpson, Moore, Stokes, and Miss Winmill; refreshments, Mesdames Browne and Wright; flowers, Misses Hay and Anderson : kitchen nicknacke. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening (all the members being in attendance) to receive and consider the report of the Special Lighting Committee bearing on the installation of an acetylene gas lighting plant in the borough. "The report recommended that a Xo. 7 Universal acetylene generator be provided, and erected on a corporation section in Whitehaven street, almost opposite the Anglican Church ; that a 3in main be laid from the. generating station to the Railway Hotel corner, and that a branch be extended along Ross place at the foot of Peel street, and also along Irvine street to near the railway station ; that an inch pipe be extended along Colonsay street to Peel street, near the Post Office corner; that the Town Hall be connected with an inch pipe from the Ross place branch, and the building provided with 30 lights ; that six arc lamps be provided for Rose place and three for Colonsay street; alternate tenders to be called for the Town Hall installation and for the street lighting, so that if the scheme as a whole ran into too much money a, tender could be accepted for the Town Hall lighting. The council spent some time in discussing the details of the scheme, and eventually referred the report back to the committee to obtain further information, with an instruction to call for alternate tenders (as recommended) and another special meeting of the council if deemed advisable. The weather keeps very changeable, and is not of the kind that pleases the farmer who is in the midst of harvest. There is still a fair amount of crop outstanding in various parts of the district, and the frequent heavy rainfalls delay harvest work very much. The oat crops generally are light this season, but they-?- i-~-«iiio fine yields of wheat to be seen in the Green/ field and Clydevale direction. The tinyfp crops all over are exceedingly good, and the areas in potatoes look proir/qngly. There is an abundance of pasVrc. and many of the hillsides look bett</and carry more feed than has been i/io case for years. Stock of all kinds a/e in line condition. I hear that one or two farm properties in the Waitahuna West direction are about to change hands, the buyers being experienced men from outside districts. The details will be available for publication a little later on. I may add that the. tendency of land values in this district is upwards. The holiday season has brought a large number of visitors to Lawrence', who take delight in the well-kept appearance of the town and in the many objects of interest in and around the district. Lawrence, March 21.
