OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD

The, monthly meeting began this morning; present —Mr J. Mitchell (chairman), Messrs A. M'Kerrow, W. Scott, P. M'Kinley. D. T. Fleming, D. Borrie, »James Smith, G. C. Israel, and the Hon. T. Fergus. The Board agreed to pav half-cost of North-east Valley asphalting" (£9 Is 3d). Repairs and imp'rovements at Kakanui. Balclutha, Brighton, Union street, and Glenledi were authorised. The Architect reported that the school building erected at Karjtane was quite satisfactory. The Christchureh District Health Officer intimated that the. Moeraki School convenience* were unsatisfactory and insanitary, and he recommended that the board be asked to remove the old building and build more modern and separate buildings for the two sexes, and provided with adequate light and ventilation.—The Architect (Mr Rodger) reported that the complaint was somewhat exaggerated, and that the outhouses are sound and worth repairing.— The board upheld the architect's report. The St. Clair Committee drew attention to the overcrowding, of the school. At present one class was being taught in the gymnasium, and when winter comes on it will be impossible to continue to do so unless the gymnasium is heated.—lt was also reported that a section nest, to the school was under offer to the board.—ln answer to a question, the Secretary (Mr Park) said that the attendance had increased to about 200.—The Hon. T. Fergus remarked that the board sent on to the Go. vernment in December last the committee's application for increased accommodation, but the Government were not likely to do anything for three or four months," and it would not do to let the present condition of affairs run into the winter.—On the motion of Mr Scott it was resolved that this matter be left in the hands of Mr Fergus, the chief inspector, and the, architect, with power to act up to £SO, the same committee to also report as to the offered site.

Kuriwao Siding applied for the establishing of a school.—Chief-inspector Richardson reported adversely, as an attendance of 15 could not be assured. He thought that the requirements of the settlers might be met by conveying the children to the Clinton School.—The inspector's recommendation was adopted and referred to the petitioners. Clydevalo applied for the removal of the school a mile further up the road, nearer the Douglas Estate.—Tho Chief Inspector reported that if a suitable conveyance were provided it could pick up all the children, except one. now ready for school. He was averse to tho school beiug shifted at present.. —Inspector's report adopted. The department intimated that a grant of £2OO will be provided for addition to the Totara residence,—Plans to be prepared, and alternative tenders in wood and stone called for. Macandrew Road applied for the erection of a janitor's residence, so that proper supervision of the buildings might be secured, so as to prevent persons damaging the place during the holidays.—Tho board resolved to forward the complaint to the police, and to not erect the residence. The teachers at Tuapeka Mouth and Maungatua asked for permission to let the school glebes.—Referred to the committees for their consent. Mr A. G. Melville was reappointed to examine the school committee's accounts. The architect recommended the erection of a new fence at Glenomaru, fence repairing, etc., at Miller's Flat, asphalting and residence repairs at Waikoikoi, fence repairing at Kurow, a hot-water service at the School of Art janitor's residence, and the payment of £5 to Macdonald Bros, as compensation for material left on the workshop site in Ward street.—These were all agreed to. It being reported that Mary H. Paterson had resigned her board senior scholarship, value £lO, the board resolved to offer t«\ scholarship to Sidney George Crimp, of Green,lsland (a senior), and in the event of his hot accepting it the scholarship be offered to Francis Johnston, of Oamaru (a junior).
