The first Sheffield Shield match, of the season commenced here yesterday in fine weather, and ori a perfect wicket. The match was between New South Wales and South Australia. The home team have lost six wickets for 420 when stumps were drawn—Crawford 47, Mayno 124, Moyes 64, Chamberlain IC3, Steele not out 35. [The Mother State was without the services of Kelloway, Macartney, Hordern, and Hazlett, eo that the bowling was far from representative.]
SOUTH MELBOURNE r. MARLBOROUGH. [Per United Press Association.] BLENHEIM, December 21. The match between the South Melbourne team (captained by Harry Trott) and Marlborough commenced to-day in fine weather and on a good wicket. The home team batted first. Two wickets fell at 9, and the third at 27, Weddo being bowled by Gillcr, the ball coming right from the off. Pearpoint and Jackson made a stubborn stand, the partnership realising 50. The former showed great freedom. Trott went on, and the change was relished by the batsmen. The fielding was very keen. Scott yorked Jackson, who made 28. Pear, point, at 97, put his leg in front to M'Cormack. Ho had made 37 by clean driving, and showed good defence. The score, at the luncheon adjournment was criht for 118. Marlborough.—First Innings. TOURING TEACHERS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, December 21. The match 'Wellington v. New South Wales teachers was resumed this afternoon. At 1.30 Wellington had lost nine wickets for 97 rims. OTAGO v. CANTERBURY. Downes will captain the Otago team to meet Canterbury at Garish rook on Christmas Day, December 26, and 27. On Wednesday play will begin at 2 p.m. D. Reese will captain the visitors. The second grade representative team who play Canterbury on Christmas Day met last evening and elected Mr George Wycherley captain. The team'will leave for the north by first express on Tuesday.
