SOFT GOODS WORKERS.
VERY LIKE A THREAT,

WELLINGTON, December 21. The following letter has _ been sent by the secretary of the Wellington Retail Soft Goods Employees’ Union to the Minister of Labor and to the Secretary of Labor, bn behalf of the members of tho above union. I desire respectfully to inform you that, whereas any action by shopkeepers to employ assistants this evening till 11 o’clock' is a distinct breach of the Shop and Offices Act, we will, in the event of such action taking place, call upon your department to prosecute all those who ai'a guilty of a breach of the law. We cannot recognise that any conference, department, or individual has power to override the statutory requirements of the Act, and we will object even to the Prime Minister exercising such arhitratqry powers. After hearing representatives' of both sides, the Secretary of the Labor Department agreed to the suggestion of the employers that the retail shops in Wellington should I>e kept open, until IX o’clock to-night in lieu of 11 o’clock' on New Year’s Eve. It is understood that the Minister of Labor endorses Mr Lomas's recommendation,
