In the Assembly Mr M'Gowen, the Premier, in refusing Mr Pa rices's request to extend the scope of the commission which is inquiring into the charges of corruption, said that if the charges meant anything they affected the integrity of the Minister and the honor of the Government. As the result of an inquiry into the report that a "corner" in mutton existed in Sydney, Mr M'Gowen stated that there was no foundation whatever for the statement. THE GAS BILL. SYDNEY. August 23. A deputation from the Stock Exchange interviewed Mr Carmichael in respect to the Gas Bill, but the Press were not admitted. The Minister, in a subsequent statement, said that the deputation agreed to the principle of the Bill and most of its provisions, but considered that the interests of the investors should be conserved. They suggested an assets company, with a capitalised dividend of 5 per cent, on the total dividends paid. Mr Carmichael informed them that he was not prepared to crystal ise tha large profit the company had mads in past years, which should have gone to the general public in the direction of a reduction in the price of gas, into a dividend-paying capital.
