(Received January 30, at 9 a.m.] An official belonging to the British Embassy, who is visaing Sydney, states that the Japanese Government have offered a subsidy for a new steam service lo the South Seas, and that it will probably start on March 1, confining its operations to the Caroline and Gilbe.it groups and their outlying islands, but later it may go to other places. He does not think that Australia need fear a Japanese overflow, but the Japanese are certainly looking towards the South Sea Islands, and he does not see how they can be kept from eventually going there.
